We've got some big festivals. One of them is the Pepsi (Student) Island. It is a very big festival. It goes for about a week in August every year. About 300 000 people goes every day. There are some big bands playing there. Last few years there were bands like Green Day, Chumbawamba, Boney M, The Bates, The Toy Dolls, Coolio, Therapy?, New Model Army and also famous Hungarian bands like Tankcsapda, HetkoznaPICSAlodasok, Prosectura, Aurora. It costs a whole lot of money. Last year (1998) it costed 9000 forint on scene (appr. $AUD 60). But if we compare it with a Rolling Stones Concert (which is only one day), it is still just three quarters of it.
These festivals are not only about music. There are tents of the anti-nuclear mission, and everything that needs to be there (Free Tibet, etc.). And there are also cultural events. Last year there was the famous Sexual Psychologist, Elvira Lux, or the famous doctor Agnes Gereb.
There is also another big festival called the Mezoturi Fesztival. This goes every year in Mezotur, a city 300 km-s from Budapest. It is organised by the same company as the Sziget festival, and there are several well-known bands here too. Like the New Model Army or The Toy Dolls.
When I came to Australia I found out that there was a free music newspaper which contains advertisments of festivals, concerts. After a few weeks I saw a 'thing' called The PushOver. It would not be interesting if the second band on the list would not be one of my favourites, the Rancid. When I got there I realised that the whole festival is nearly the same as I am used to from home. All those interesting events, and heaps of famous, and good bands. Report of PushOver '98 is here.
There was another festival I attended. It was called the Vans Warped tour. It is not an only Australian festival, like the Push. It is very international. It was in Hungary on the 12th of September 1998, but unfortunately I've left Budapest on the 15th of August. So I could not be there to see bands like Bad Religion, Die Toten Hosen, H-Bloxx or The Specials. I had to go to the one in Melbourne in January 1999. In October I saw a poster that said the Bad Religion, The Specials, Pennywise and MxPx would be there. So I decided to go, and bought my ticket. than two weeks before the Australian tour started I saw an other poster that said that BR and the Specials are not coming, but Suicidal Tendencies and Less Than Jake jumped in instead of them. Great, I thought. I don't really like ST, and I hade no idea about LTJ. Never mind. But now I can't fit my report under this title, but go here for more!
