Rancid was started in 1991 after the demise of the legendary ska/punk band Operation Ivy. Rancid's founder and front man Tim 'Lint' Armstrong started Rancid after being down and out in a salvation army shelter for 2 weeks, Tim along with his longtime friend Matt Freeman moved from band to band but nothing ever seemed to last..Untill they met up with gilman street regular and current drummer Breet Reed. Tim, Matt and Brett started playing locally and building up a strong fan base around the east bay, Rancid went on to release their first 7" on Lookout! Records. Rancid then hooked up with former U.K. Subs guitarist Lars Frederickson. Before Lars, Tim asked his longtime friend Billie Joe of Greenday to join as another guitarist Billie Joe played one show with rancid but decided that being in both rancid and greenday would not work out therefor leaving the door wide open to Lars. Rancid signed to Epitaph records and recorded their first self titled album, Lars didn't appear on the first album because he felt the other guys worked to hard on the album and he didn't want to take credit for being on the album. After the self titled album they recorded the 'Radio,Radio,Radio' 7" on Fat Wreck Chords this is Lars' first appearance on a Rancid record. Rancid followed up the release of the 'Radio,Radio,Radio' 7" with their second full length album called 'Let's Go!' This album showcases Rancid's straight ahead punk rock with catchy vocals and great songwriting. 1995 brought the release of '...And out come the wolves' a mix of punk and ska and 2 hit songs 'Timebomb' and 'Ruby Soho'. In June of 1998 Rancid released "Life Won't Wait" their 4th and most diverse record. Life Won't Wait has a touch of everything punk, ska, reggae and rockabilly bringing out the Clash comparisons once again...
