Sex Pistols

1975, the 6th of November. Scene: Art Stage of  St. Martin School. On stage: The Sex Pistols on their first concert. In the beginning they played songs of The Who, Small Faces, and songs of old bands. Then came their own songs. They usually went to University parties and said that they were the band. They played in different clubs like this. In around 1976 they found the El Paradise to play regulary. On one of the pirate concerts Ron Watts, the head of the 100 club saw them, and gave the Tuesdays to them in his club. “I want people to do something when they hear our music, otherwise I’m just wasting my time!” - said Johnny Rotten. Not much later lots of garage-bands started their carreer. Johnny Rotten became a school-singer. In 1976, on the 10th of October the EMI made an engagement with them. Next day they went to the studio, and recorded their ‘Anarchy in the UK’ song:

“I am an antichrist
I am an anarchist
Don’t know what I want but
I know how to get it
I wanna destroy the passerbys
‘cause I wanna be Anarchy!

No dogs body!

Anarchy for the UK
Is coming sometime maybe
I give a wrong time, stop the traffic line
Your future dream is a shopping scheme
‘cause I wanna be Anarchy!

In the city!

Many ways to get what you want
I use the best
I use the rest
I use the NME (enemy)
I use Anarchy
‘cause I wanna be Anarchy

That’s the only way to be!

Is this the MPLA or
Is this the UDA or is this the IRA
‘Cause I thought it was the UK
Or just an other country

An other council tennancy

And I wanna be Anarchy
And I wanna be Anarchy

You know what I mean?

And I wanna be anarchist

Get pissed
Destroy”

On the 19th of November the album was in the shops. The 1st of December (two days before their tour) they got an interview with Bill Grundy. After the interview the guest bands (Ramones, Talking Heads, Vibrators) refused to play, instead of them The Clash, The Damned and The Heartbrakers came, nearly for no reason, because half of the hosting towns refused to host the concert. After the interview Bill Grundy said that it was not his most difficult interview but he would have loved to punch Rotten. “I have spent 30 years at the television, I made interviews with everyone down from the prime minister. I’m not used to The Pistols, but they were much easier then the politicians, who really don’t want to say anyhing”. (After the interview Bill Grundy said he was drinking the same amount as the Pistols members did before it). On the 6th of January 1977 EMI broke contract with them. But before it they made a photo of themselves like the Beatles did on the Please Please Me album. Because of the short time the Pistols got 40 000 pounds. On the 10th of March A&M made an agreement with them for 150 000 pounds which they broke on the 16th. “I got three tonnes of safety pins and razor blades. I cut my clothes. I can’t understand how could such a serious firm like the A&M make an agreement with the Sex Pistols” - said Rick Wakeman, one of the principals. So A&M had to pay 75 000 more pounds to know the Pistols outside the door. On the 12th of May Virgin Records made an agreement with them for 50 000 pounds. Two weeks later the second album came out with the title “God Save the Queen!” Although the TV and the Radio had it under a national prohibition and a lot of record shops refused to sell it, it jumped to the top of the top ten in three weeks.
1977 was a famous year. Queen Elizabeth the 2nd had been the Queen for 25 years. She asked the members of Beatles to give a concert together. It would have been great, but the musical present was not handed over by the knights of 1965, John, Paul, George and Ringo. Instead of them John, Paul, Steve and Sid gave the present to the empreror. They will never be knights, but they made something very exciting. By the date of the jubilee they were on the top... The 7th of June came. The Pistols helped the celebration on their own way. They hired the Queen Elizabeth ship, and gave a river concert on the Thames.
In July the 3rd album came out with the title “Pretty Vacant”. Followed by “Holidays in the Sun” in October. In 1978 they stopped playing. Rotten became jelous of Sid. That was the main reason...
On the 11th of October Nancy, Sid’s girlfriend was found murdered in the bathroom. The first person who fell under suspicious was Sid. Malcolm McLaren, the always working manager took him out of prison. To get the money they sold t-shirts with the writing ‘Sid is innocent’ on. The death of Nancy was a not working double suicide. Two weeks before her death she told her parents: “I’m 20, I won’t be 21!”. When Sid came out of prison he said: “I want to follow Nancy! I didn’t keep our agreement!”. Then Sid had to go to a drug-withdrawal cure. In December he was taken to custody, because he had broken a beer-glass on Patti Smith’s brother, Todd Smith’s head. He got out on McLaren’s money on the 1st of February 1979. His mother made a party to celebrate this. Next day she wanted to wake Sid up. She found him dead. He died of using too much heroin.
