In the mid-'90s, the Christian Contemporary world had groups to match almost every shade of the popular-music spectrum, with MXPX (aka Magnified Plaid) the most popular of Christian punk-pop bands, as well as one of the most respected in all circles -- above or underground, Christian or secular. In fact, many secular listeners had no idea of the band's gospel leanings.
The band was formed by vocalist/bassist Mike Herrera, guitarist Tom Wisniewski and drummer Yuri Ruley in Bremerton, Washington, while its members were high-school freshman. By the time they got their driver's licenses, the trio had released several seven-inch singles and their debut album Polkinatcha for Tooth & Nail Records. It quickly became the label's best-seller and prompted the release of the band's second, Teenage Politics. Popular with the skate/surf community as well as the punk underground (with a snowboard sponsorship to their name), MXPX broke out of the underground in 1996 with their third LP, Life in General. Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo followed in 1998. -- John Bush, All-Music Guide
